Variety
Variety, in biology, a group of plants or animals within a species. Varieties of animals are usually called breeds. The members of a variety or breed have certain characteristics that set them apart from others of their species, but which do not make them sufficiently distinctive to form a separate species. For example, all cultivated corn belongs to the species Zea mays. Sweet corn, dent corn, flint corn, and popcorn are varieties of the species.
The terms variety and breed are restricted to domesticated plants and animals. The comparable term applied to wild plants and animals is subspecies.
