National Medal of Science
National Medal of Science, an annual award given to persons who have made, during their careers, outstanding contributions to the physical sciences, the biological sciences, mathematics, or engineering. The medal was authorized by Congress in 1959. The awards are made by the President to persons suggested to him by the President's Committee on the National Medal of Science. The medal was first awarded in 1962.
