Execution, in civil law, a court order, or writ, empowering an officer to enforce a judgment. An example is a writ of fieri facias, which directs the sheriff to seize property of the loser of a lawsuit. The property is then sold to pay the winner the amount specified in the judgment.

In criminal law, execution usually refers to the carrying out of the death sentence.
