5 Spa Treatments to Skip on Your Honeymoon

5 Spa Treatments to Skip on your Honeymoon

Sit back; relax, and pray choosing to get this spa treatment won't completely ruin your honeymoon.

Whether you're dreaming of your feet in the sand or a light snowfall, you want your honeymoon to be relaxing and wonderful. Part of that might include a serene day at the spa. However, there are a few treatments that you should forgo on your big getaway. These treatments, as awesome as they might seem, have some side effects that you just don't want to mess with while you're on vacation.

5: Botox

Botox isn't something that you want to get on a whim while on your honeymoon. You should do extensive research on the procedure and interview lots of technicians before choosing to undergo Botox. Because the substance, a protein called botulinum toxin, (it's the same bacteria that causes food poisoning) is administered via a shot and paralyzes the muscle it's injected into, you don't want to leave any room for error. Along with irritation at the injection site, you can experience bruising, swelling, nausea, pain and a severely droopy eyelid (if you received an injection in that area). The cosmetic side effects can take seven to 10 days to go away, which is just long enough to ruin your honeymoon.

4: Tanning Beds

Most people see tanning beds as a quick fix for sun-kissed skin, since you can spend less time in a bed than outside in the real sun to get the same effects. The truth is, lots of sun exposure is unhealthy for many reasons, whether it's in a tanning bed or not. The side effects can be extensive, the most obvious being sunburned epidermis. Sunburn reactions can be as minimal as slight discoloration of the skin or as severe as blisters, sun poisoning, chills and fever. Tanning beds generally release around 95 percent ultraviolet radiation. This is three times what the sun releases. So think twice before taking a trip to the tanning bed on your honeymoon, and always wear SPF lotion when you are out in the sun.

3: Chemical Peels

A chemical peel can be extremely irritating to your skin and definitely isn't a procedure you want to get while on vacation. Along with redness and irritation, you can encounter burning, peeling, sensitivity to the sun and changes in skin color. You may even experience permanent scarring. Chemical peels range from mild to more extreme, but you should always consult a professional with a medical license for this kind of treatment before doing anything -- and wait until after your honeymoon just to be safe.

Waxing is painful and causes ingrown hairs, but the worst side effect is extremely irritated skin. You shouldn't expose your freshly waxed skin to the sun, exfoliate the area, take a steamy shower or sit in a hot tub for 48 hours. So, basically, if you're headed to the beach (or plan on spending any time outdoors) you'll be severely restricted as to what you can do. Also, if you wax your bikini area, you run into a whole new set of problems. Because of the increased sensitivity and susceptibility of bacteria to the area, you'll want to avoid any intimacy for a few days, which is not the best side effect to have to endure on your honeymoon.

Saunas can be relaxing, but if you're having a lot of fun in the sun along with spending time in a sauna, you run a high risk of dehydration. Spending time in the hospital because you got dehydrated isn't the honeymoon memories you likely wanted to make. Saunas generally range from around 80 degrees to 125 degrees Fahrenheit, so be sure to drink a lot of water before you visit one. The Institute of Medicine says that in order to stay hydrated, men should drink around 13 cups of water a day and women should drink around 9 cups per day. However, when you sweat profusely, you need to drink more in order to compensate for the extra liquid that your body is losing. So take our advice and skip the sauna. There are other ways, safer ways to crank up the heat on your honeymoon!
