How to Scent Liquid

Candles and incense -- who needs ‘em? Instead, use reeds to diffuse delicate liquid scents that seem mild but fight big odors so guests will only notice how lovely your home smells – and not the dog or teenagers. You can even make your own custom fragrance using your favorite essential oils; read on to find out how.

Plan Your Scent Concept

Are you thinking of a summer scent? Something woodsy and crisp? Perhaps a cinnamon-peppermint infusion for the holidays? You’ll want to have essential oils in your scents of choice at hand. Look for them at a local health or supplement stores, drugstores, or through online retailers.

Gather Your Ingredients

Creating your own liquid scent is easy; you just need the right ingredients. Replacement reed diffusers, essential oils and fragrance-grade propylene glycol, available online and in craft stores, are all you need to get started making the perfect, in-season scent for your home.

Mix it Up

Make a mix that’s about 30% essential oil and 70% propylene glycol. After mixing your oils and propylene glycol in a bowl, use a funnel and pour the ingredients into a glass dish or bottle – any vessel that will accommodate your scent-releasing reeds without them falling over. Don’t fill it all the way to the top, though -- you want room for your reeds!

Add Finishing Touches

Add your reeds – you can’t recycle these, but most home stores sell them new or you can find them online – and a bow or decorative piece of Washi tape to customize the look of your holder. Then set the mixture up out of reach of kids and pets, and let the light, fresh fragrance fill your home.
