Rockefeller University: Pioneering Biomedical Research & Education

Rockefeller University

Rockefeller University

Rockefeller University, a graduate university and research center with headquarters in New York City. It furthers research and teaching in the biomedical sciences through a faculty of internationally famous scholars. Enrollment is limited, and only outstanding students are admitted. Each is given a fellowship; there is no tuition. Only the Ph.D. degree is awarded.

John D. Rockefeller, Sr., founded the institution, which was chartered in 1901 by the State of New York as the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research. In 1954 the charter was revised to permit the institute to become a graduate university. The phrase “for Medical Research” was dropped in 1958, and in 1965 the name Rockefeller University was adopted. A board of trustees governs the university.
