Peyton C. March

March, Peyton Conway (1864–1955), a United States army officer. March became chief of staff of the U.S. Army in 1918, during World War I, and in that position speeded up the transport of troops to France and increased efficiency through organizational changes. He continued as chief of staff, holding the rank of general, until retiring in 1921.

March was born in Easton, Pennsylvania. He graduated from Lafayette College in 1884 and from West Point in 1888. He fought in the Philippines during the Spanish-American War, and later against Filipino insurgents. March was artillery commander of the American Expeditionary Force (A.E.F.) in France before becoming chief of staff. In The Nation at War (1932) he criticized A.E.F. commander John J. Pershing, with whom he carried on a long feud.
