Thomas Cassin Kinkaid

Kinkaid Thomas Cassin (1888–1972), a United States naval officer. Kinkaid was one of the major naval leaders of World War II. He participated in the battles of the Coral Sea and Midway; he also led carrier forces in battles in the Solomon and Santa Cruz islands. In 1943 Kinkaid commanded the forces that recovered the Aleutians from the Japanese. Later that year, he was given command of the Seventh Fleet and made commander of Allied naval forces in the Southwest Pacific. He commanded the Seventh Fleet in the Battle of Leyte Gulf, 1944, in which the Japanese fleet was destroyed.

Kinkaid was born in Hanover, New Hampshire, and graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1908. He worked with the British Admiralty during World War I. Before World War II, he was naval attaché at United States embassies in Rome and Belgrade. Kinkaid was made rear admiral in 1942 and promoted to full admiral in 1945. He retired in 1950.
