Salomon A. Andree

Andrée, Salomon August (1854-1897), a Swedish explorer. On July 11, 1897, Andrée and two companions set out on the first flight to the North Pole, from Spitsbergen (Svalbard) in the well-equipped balloon Ornen (Eagle). Except for one pigeon and two buoys carrying messages, Andrée and his companions were never heard from again.

In 1930 their remains were discovered on White Island, east of Spitsbergen. Andrée's diary revealed that the balloon had been forced down on July 14, 1897, about 500 miles (800 km) from the Pole. The men attempted to return to Spitsbergen, reaching White Island in September. The last diary entry was dated October 6.
