Mojave Indians
Mojave (or Mohave) Indians, an Indian tribe of the Yuman language family of the Hokan linguistic stock. In the early 19th century, the Mojaves lived on both sides of the lower Colorado River, on what is now the border between Arizona and California. They used rafts made of bundles of reeds in fishing, but lived mainly on corn, pumpkins, melons, and beans. Their huts were covered with brushwood and sand. The Colorado River Reservation was established for the Mojave in 1865. A majority of the roughly 1,400 remaining members live there or on the nearby Fort Mojave Reservation. The Mojave Desert and Mojave River are named for them.
The Yavapai, another tribe of the Yuman language family, is often called Apache Mojave.
