Anasazi
Anasazi, a prehistoric American Indian people who influenced other Indians of their region. The name comes from a Navajo word meaning ancient ones. Remains of their culture are found mainly in the Four Corners area, where Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, and Utah meet.
Anasazi Indians built Pueblo Bonito in what is now New Mexico.Anasazi development can be divided into three phases. The first is called the Basketmaker period, from about 100 B.C. to 750 A.D. During this time, the Anasazi mastered the art of weaving and refined their skills as farmers and potterymakers. They lived in pit houses, dwellings that were partially underground. The second phase is called the Pueblo period, from about 750 to 1000. During this time, the Anasazi developed aboveground structures called pueblos, built on top of mesas. In the final phase, from about 1000 to 1300, the Anasazi left their mesa-top dwellings and erected multistoried pueblos on cliff ledges.
