Keokuk
Keokuk (1780?–1848), a leader of the Sac (Sauk) tribe of Indians, notable as an orator and diplomat. He accepted a treaty ceding Sac and Fox lands in Illinois, and moved with part of the allied tribes to Iowa. His decision was opposed by Black Hawk, who led the remaining Indians in the disastrous war of 1832. After the war Keokuk was accepted as chief. On a mission to Washington, he argued successfully that the Sac and Fox had won by conquest the right to lands in Iowa.
