Claude J. Allouez

Allouez, Claude Jean (1622–1689), a French Jesuit missionary and an early explorer of the Lake Superior region. He was called “the apostle of the west.” He came to Canada in 1658 and was appointed vicar general for all traders and natives of the northwest in 1663.

From 1665 to 1675, Allouez traveled among the Indians of the Lake Superior-Lake Michigan region and established missions, including one at De Pere (in what is now Wisconsin) in 1671. From 1676 until his death he worked among the Illinois and Miami Indians.
