Samuel Hood

Hood, Samuel, First Viscount Hood (1724–1816), a British naval officer. Hood entered the navy in 1741. He was commander of the North American fleet, 1767–70. During the American Revolution he fought the French in American waters. Hood commanded the Mediterranean fleet, 1793–94, against the French revolutionaries. He was made admiral in 1794 and viscount in 1796.
