Samuel Alexander Mudd

Mudd, Samuel Alexander (1833–1883), the physician who set the broken leg of John Wilkes Booth and was convicted as a conspirator in the assassination of President Lincoln. He was born in Charles County, Maryland, and studied medicine in Baltimore. Booth stopped at Dr. Mudd's office in Bryantown in flight from the murder scene. Evidence that they had met previously convinced a military commission of Dr. Mudd's guilt. Many persons since have attempted to prove his innocence. He was imprisoned at Fort Jefferson in the Dry Tortugas, Florida. His heroic work as a doctor during a yellow fever epidemic resulted in his pardon in 1869.
