Jack Cade
Cade, Jack (died 1450), the leader of a rebellion in England. Little is known of his origin. In 1450 he became a hero to many English townspeople when he led a band of Kentish rebels protesting court corruption and other wrongs. Cade assumed the name of Mortimer, and may have claimed to be a relative of the Duke of York. His followers defeated the army of King Henry VI at Sevenoaks, and shortly after seized control of London. Two of the king's counselors were put to death. The rebels soon began looting and rioting and lost popular support. After a bloody battle with royal troops, most of Cade's men accepted an offer of amnesty and dispersed. Cade went to Kent, where he was killed in a minor uprising.
