Sebastian de Belalcazar

Belalcázar), Sebastián de, the assumed name of Sebastián Moyano (1495?–1551?), a Spanish conquistador. He first won renown in the Spanish campaigns in Nicaragua and Honduras, 1524–27. As an officer under Francisco Pizarro, he participated in the conquest of Peru, 1532–33. After being sent to a northern base, Belalcázar put down an Inca revolt in Quito and then subdued the rest of Ecuador during 1534–35. Afterward, he conquered Indian tribes in Colombia, where he briefly served as a provincial governor.
