Rupert, Prince , Count Palatine of Rhine and Duke of Bavaria (1619–1682), a nephew and general of Charles I of England. He was born in Prague, Bohemia, the son of Elizabeth, daughter of James I of England. Rupert took part in the Thirty Years' War and in 1642 went to England and fought under his uncle, Charles I, in the civil war. Rupert won early victories but was defeated by Oliver Cromwell at Marston Moor and Naseby.

At the Restoration in 1660 Rupert returned to England with his cousin, Charles II. He was a member of the Privy Council and served as an admiral in the Dutch Wars (1665–67, 1672–74). Rupert engaged in scientific experiments and was also interested in commerce. He was the first governor of the Hudson's Bay Company.
