Matilda

Matilda, the name of two queens of England.

Matilda (1080-1118), queen of Henry I. Her parents were Malcolm III and Saint Margaret of Scotland.

Matilda (1102–1167), the daughter and heir of King Henry I of England. She was also known as Empress Maud because of her marriage to Holy Roman Emperor Henry V of Germany in 1114. Her husband died in 1125 and in 1128 she married a French noble, Geoffrey Plantagenet, count of Anjou. After her father's death in 1135, her cousin Stephen seized the throne to which she was heir. A civil war followed, and Matilda returned from France. She was recognized as queen by some in 1141 but was never crowned. She fled to France in 1148. Her son became Henry II of England in 1154.
