George Bryan Brummell
Brummell, George Bryan (1778–1840), an Englishman known as “Beau” Brummell because of the fashionable manner in which he dressed. He was born in London and attended Eton and Oxford. At the age of 16 he became a close friend of the Prince of Wales, afterward George IV.
For 20 years Brummell set the standard of dress and etiquette for London. In his later years, however, he lost royal favor and gambled away his inheritance. He fled to France to escape his creditors. He later became mentally unstable. He died a pauper, in an asylum in Caen.
