Charles the Bald
Charles the Bald (823–877), a medieval emperor and king of the West Franks. As emperor, he is always listed as Charles II; as king, he is sometimes listed as Charles I, sometimes as Charles II. He was the grandson of Charlemagne and the son of Louis the Pious. On their father's death, Louis's three sons divided Charlemagne's empire by the Treaty of Verdun in 843. The three parts corresponded to modern Germany, France, and the borderlands between them. Charles received the French part and thus became the first true king of France. In 875, when his nephew Louis II died, Charles received the title of emperor.
