Petra
Petra, an ancient city in what is now southwestern Jordan, 115 miles (185 km) south-southwest of Amman. There are many remains of the city's tombs, temples, and dwellings, which were hewn out of rock walls of many colors and ornamented with facades. Petra may have been the Biblical Sela, in Edom.
The Nabataeans, an Arab tribe, gained control of the city perhaps about 400 B.C. Petra became a prosperous caravan station because of its abundant springs. Rome annexed the Nabataean kingdom during 105–06 A.D. and made it the province of Arabia. Soon afterwards, Palmyra replaced Petra in economic importance.
