Latins

Latins, or Latini, an ancient people, according to tradition the founders of Rome. They were one group of the Italians, Indo-European people who settled in the Italian Peninsula before 1000 B.C. The region in which the Latins lived, approximately between the Tiber and Garigliano rivers, was known as Latium. The Italians were agricultural people. However, after the founding of Rome, probably in the mid-eighth century B.C., the Latins there became prosperous traders and in time brought all the Latin cities under Roman control.
