Philippi
Philippi, an ancient city in Macedonia. It was about 10 miles (16 km) northwest of present-day Kaválla, Greece. Ruins of an amphitheater and temple are here. The city was named for Philip of Macedon, who enlarged and fortified it about 358 B.C. Octavian and Mark Antony defeated Brutus and Cassius in battle here in 42 B.C. Saint Paul first preached the gospel in Europe at Philippi.
