South Georgia
South Georgia, an island in the South Atlantic Ocean, about 1,200 miles (1,900 km) east of Cape Horn. South Georgia and the nearby South Sandwich Islands form a dependency of Great Britain. The islands are also claimed by Argentina. South Georgia is a barren, rocky island with an area of 1,450 square miles (3,755 km2). The British Antarctic explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton is buried here. Captain James Cook discovered South Georgia in 1775 and claimed it for Britain. Once important as a whaling station, the island is now virtually uninhabited.
