Darwin, Australia, a port and the capital of Northern Territory. The city is at the entrance of Port Darwin, an inlet of the Timor Sea, on Australia's northern coast. Darwin has a tropical climate. The city's economy is based mainly on its port. Darwin was founded as Palmerston in 1869 and renamed after the naturalist Charles Darwin in 1911. It served as a port for Allied troops during World War II. The city was heavily damaged by a tropical cyclone in 1974. During the 1990's the city was developed as a major center for Australia's trade with Asia.
