Geography of Whitehorse

Whitehorse, Yukon Territory, Cananda, the territory's capital and largest city. It is on the Yukon River, about 160 miles (257 km) north of Juneau, Alaska. Whitehorse is a transportation and communications center for the Yukon. It is on the Alaska and Klondike highways and is linked by road to Skagway, Alaska. There is also scheduled airline service. Government and mining in nearby areas are the chief sources of employment.

Whitehorse began as a supply center for miners during the Klondike gold rush in the late 1890's. The city's importance grew greatly after the completion of the Alaska Highway in the early 1940's. Whitehorse became the territorial captial in 1952.
