Geography of Charlottetown
Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Canada, the capital and largest city of the province. Charlottetown lies on Hillsborough Bay, an arm of the Northumberland Strait. Industries include meatpacking, milk and fruit processing, and woodworking. The city is a popular summer vacation spot, and tourism is a key source of income. Charlottetown's port is the province's busiest.
A major attraction is Confederation Centre, which houses theaters, an art gallery, library, and other facilities. Charlottetown Driving Park is a popular track for harness racing. The province's chief institution of higher education, the University of Prince Edward Island, is in Charlottetown.
Charlottetown was founded in 1763 and became the capital of the colony in 1769. In 1864, it was the site of a conference at which the first steps toward Canada's confederation were taken. Confederation Centre was built to mark the 100th anniversary of the conference.
