Geography of Ljubljana
Ljubljana, the capital and largest city of Slovenia. It is near the Sava River and the Julian Alps in the extreme northwestern part of the country. The city is a prosperous manufacturing, educational, and transportation center. Landmarks include a cathedral, an opera house, several museums, a university, and a 12th-century castle situated high on a hill overlooking the old part of the city.
Ljubljana was founded as Emona by the Romans in 34 B.C. The Austrian Hapsburgs ruled the city from 1278 to 1918, when Ljubljana became a part of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes (later known as Yugoslavia). During World War II the city was occupied by the Italians and Germans. In 1992, when Slovenia became independent, Ljubljana became the national capital.
