Oporto, (Portuguese: Porto,), Portugal, the capital of Porto administrative district and Douro Literal province. The city is a port near the mouth of the Douro River, 5 miles (8 km) from the Atlantic Ocean and 170 miles (274 km) north of Lisbon. Its main harbor is at Leixões Oporto is noted for shipments of port, a wine taking its name from that of the city. Local products are textiles and clothing. Oporto University is here. The city's most conspicuous landmark is the Torre dos Clérigos, a 250-foot (76-m) 18th-century bell tower.

Oporto was settled in pre-Roman times. Under the Romans the city was known as Cale, and later as Portus Cale. During the 10th century the city became the capital of the county of Portucalia, which later gave its name to the kingdom of Portugal. Prince Henry the Navigator was born here in 1394.
