Geography of the City of Luxembourg
Luxembourg, Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, the nation's capital and largest city. It is in south-central Luxembourg on the Alzette River. Luxembourg is primarily a banking, financial, and administrative center, but is also a manufacturing city and transportation hub. Probably foremost among the city's attractions are the old fortifications that once made Luxembourg the “Gibraltar of the North.” Also notable are the 16th-century Grand Ducal Palace and the Cathedral of Notre Dame. Luxembourg was founded as a fortress in 963.
