Geography of Kosice
Košice, Slovakia, the capital of Východoslovenský kraj (region). It was formerly named Kassa (Hungarian) and Kaschau (German). Košice is on the Hornád River, 185 miles (300 km) northeast of Bratislava, the national capital. It is an industrial city, a railway transportation hub, and a regional commercial center. A technical university and a Gothic cathedral are there. Košice was founded in the 9th century A.D. and was chartered in the 13th century. During most of its existence Košice was part of Hungary. It came under Czechoslovakian rule in 1920. In 1993, after the breakup of Czechoslovakia, Košice became a part of an independent Slovakia.
