Geography of Stavanger
Stavanger, Norway, the seat of the county of Rogaland. It lies on Bokna Fjord, a large inlet on the southwestern coast. Stavanger is Norway's chief fish-processing center, a major seaport, and the market for a rich farming area. It also has manufacturing industries and is an important base for exploitation of the North Sea oil fields. Attractions in the city include a 12th-century Romanesque cathedral and a museum with notable archeological exhibits. Little is known of Stavanger before the early 12th century, when it became a Catholic bishopric. The town remained small and relatively insignificant until the rapid development of herring fishing and the Norwegian merchant marine in the mid-1800's.
