Kaunas, Lithuania, a city on the Neman River, about 60 miles (100 km) west-northwest of Vilnius, the national capital. It is an industrial and commercial city; products include textiles, paper, and chemicals. Kaunas was established during the Middle Ages. It was the capital of Lithuania during 1920–40.
