Geography of Reykjavik

Reykjavik, or Reikjavik, Iceland, the national capital. It is situated on Faxa Bay on the southwest coast, and is the country's chief port and commercial center. It has shipyards, fish-processing plants, and light manufacturing. The University of Iceland is here. The city's water system supplies naturally occurring hot water from deep wells. (The steam from hot springs in the area gave the city its name, which means "Smoking Bay.") At Keflavík, about 20 miles (32 km) west, is an international airport.

Reykjavik was founded by Norse in 874 as Iceland's first permanent settlement.

Population: 113,022.
