Geography of Leon
León, Nicaragua, a city on the León River, 42 miles (68 km) northwest of Managua, the capital. León's factories produce cloth, cigars, shoes, saddles, furniture, soap, wines, and cheese. León's cathedral is probably the largest in Central America. It contains the tomb of the poet Rubén Darío (1867-1916). The National University is here. León was founded in 1523. It was the colonial capital of Nicaragua and the nation's first capital, 1839-52. The city was badly damaged during a revolution in the late 1970's.
