Geography of Tegucigalpa

Tegucigalpa, Honduras, the republic's capital and largest city. It is in a hilly area on the Choluteca River, about 60 miles (95 km) from the Gulf of Fonseca, an arm of the Pacific Ocean. The processing and shipping of coffee from the nearby highlands is the principal economic activity. A few factories produce consumer goods, including beer, soap, matches, and clothing. Tegucigalpa is connected to the Pan American Highway and has air service but no railway service. Within the city are San Miguel Cathedral and the National University.

Tegucigalpa was founded in 1758 as a mining town. It became the country's capital in 1880.
