Belize City, Belize, the nation's largest city and principal commercial, industrial, and transportation center. It lies on the Caribbean Sea at the mouth of the Belize River. Belize City was the country's capital until 1970, when the government was officially transferred to Belmopan, then under construction about 30 miles (48 km) inland.
