Geography of Inchon
Inchon, South Korea, a city on the Yellow Sea about 20 miles (32 km) southwest of Seoul, the national capital. Inchon is a major port and one of four Korean cities with the status of a province. Also an industrial city, it produces textiles, iron and steel, glass, chemicals, and lumber, and serves as a shipping point for the industrial and agricultural products of the Seoul area. Inchon is linked with Seoul by rail and highways, including the first expressway built in Korea. Inha University is here.
Inchon, originally called Chemulpo, was a small fishing village until it became one of three Korean ports opened to foreign trade late in the 19th century. The port facilities and local industries expanded during the Japanese occupation of 1910–45. A United Nations amphibious landing here in September, 1950, was a turning point in the Korean War.
