Geography of Malacca

Malacca (Malay: Melaka),Malaysia, the capital of the Malayan state of Melaka. It is a port on the Strait of Malacca at the mouth of the Melaka River, 130 miles (210 km) northwest of Singapore. Malacca exports rubber and copra. It was settled about 1400 by Malays and was a trade center and a base for Muslim missionaries. Malacca fell to the Portuguese in 1511, and to the Dutch in 1641. It was ceded to Great Britain in 1824 and was part of the Straits Settlements from 1826 through World War II. In 1957 it became part of independent Malaya. which in turn became part of Malaysia in 1963.
