Geography of Semey
Semey, formerly Semipalatinsk, Kazakhstan, a city on the Irtysh River in the northeastern part of the country, near the Russian border. It is a railway center and a river port. Industries include meat packing, flour milling, tanning, ship repairing, and metalworking.
The city was founded by Russians in 1718 as a military outpost. Most of its growth and economic development came during the 20th century, following the construction of railways. The Turkestan-Siberia Railway, reached the city in 1906, linking it to Siberia in the north and to Central Asia in the south.
