The 1940-1942 Chrysler New Yorker Highlander is the result of Chrysler revamping its cars for 1940, and there are many collectible two-door models in this design generation, which lasted into 1949.

By far the most interesting are the special-trim two-door (and, rarely, the occasional four-door) New Yorker models with Scottish plaid cloth and leatherette upholstery. This option cost $20-25 extra, and cars so equipped carried "Highlander" script, although Chrysler listed a distinct Highlander model in 1940 only. On convertibles, the plaid fabric was also used for the top boot. Highlander plaid has been reproduced for restorers.
