1980 NASCAR Winston Cup Results

During the 1980 NASCAR Winston Cup season, unpolished sophomore driver Dale Earnhardt drove his way into the starry world of NASCAR racing with relative ease. Staving off challenges from Richard Petty and Cale Yarborough for the championship, Earnhardt emerged from obscurity to instant fame, fortune and headlines. The 1980 NASCAR series would also be the last for the behemoth full-size cars. After the 1980 campaign, NASCAR shifted to the smaller, more efficient cars saturating the American marketplace. Thunderbird under the checkered flag to win the
July 4 Firecracker 400 at Daytona International
Speedway. In victory lane, Allison announced he
would seek a new ride in 1981. "There are only
a few tracks the Ford is competitive on," he said.
