Ox
Ox, any individual animal of the cattle genus, Bos, including domestic cattle and the banteng, gaur, kouprey, and yak. In domestic cattle, the term “ox” usually refers to a castrated male used as a work animal; these animals are trained to pull heavy loads by means of a yoke (a wooden frame that fits over and around their necks).
Oxen were first used as beasts of burden in Asia Minor more than 4,000 years ago. Many of the wagon trains that carried settlers to the western parts of the United States were pulled by oxen. Oxen are still used to pull plows in some areas of the world.
