Killdeer
Killdeer, a bird named for its shrill, piercing cry, “Killdee! Killdee!” The mature bird is about 10 inches (25 cm) long. It is brown above and white below, with two black bands across its breast. Killdeers are found in meadows and other open areas from Alaska to Chile. They eat insects. Killdeers nest in depressions in the ground. The female typically lays four eggs and both parents care for the young.
The killdeer is Charadrius vociferus of the plover family, Charadriidae.
