Pachyderm, a term formerly used in biological classifications of the elephant, rhinoceros, hippopotamus, tapir, hyrax, and pig. The word, now used chiefly as a mock-scientific synonym for elephant, comes from the Greek for “thick-skinned.”

The elephant is considered a pachyderm.
