Poinciana

Poinciana, a flowering tree or shrub of warm regions. It has many feathery leaflets and showy, five-petaled blossoms with protruding red stamens. The royal poinciana, or peacock-flower, is a small tree with scarlet flowers. It is native to Madagascar and is cultivated in Florida and California. Poinciana shrubs grown in the southernmost parts of the United States include the bird-of-paradise bush, with yellow flowers; and the Barbados pride, or dwarf poinciana, with orange flowers.

The royal poinciana is Delonix regia; bird-of-paradise bush, Poinciana gilliesi; Barbados pride, P. pulcherrima. All belong to the pea family, Leguminosae.
