Salpiglossis, a genus of about eight species of annual or perennial herbs native to Chile. The plants can grow to a height of three feet (90 cm). Their leaves are pale green and are covered with short, sticky hairs. The large, funnel-shaped flowers can be purple, blue, red, yellow, or white, and may be veined in gold. One species, called painted tongue, is commonly cultivated as an ornamental garden flower.

Painted tongue is Salpiglossis sinuata of the nightshade family, Solanaceae.
