Nux Vomica: Properties, History & Traditional Uses

Nux Vomica

Nux Vomica

Nux Vomica, the poisonous seed of a tree native to southeastern Asia, India, and Australia. It is also the name of the tree and was the name of medicines made from the seed. The term is Latin for "vomiting nut"; however, the seed does not cause vomiting.

The seed contains several alkaloids, of which the poison strychnine is the most active. Rat poisons have long been made from the seed. Small quantities of extracts of the seed were once widely used in stimulating medicines.

The gray, saucer-shaped seeds are produced in small orange-colored fruits by the nux vomica tree. It grows up to 40 feet (12 m) in height, and has oval leaves.

The nux vomica tree is Strychnos nux-vomica and belongs to the family Loganiaceae.
