Kava

Kava, the name of a shrub of Australia, New Zealand, and the South Pacific islands. The shrub grows to 20 feet (6 m) and bears yellowish-orange fruit. The roots are ground, soaked in water, and allowed to ferment to produce an intoxicating drink also called kava. Preparation of the drink is an important part of religious ceremonies in Fiji and Samoa.

Kava is Piper methysticum of the pepper family, Piperaceae.
